FCSK001. TOUR THE CITY OF NAIROBI. 03 hours
The tour covers the modern city center, the colorful Municipal market and Parliament buildings. A little out of town, closer to the Railway Museum where, beside the display of early blueprints of the railway and pictures recording the progress, is the paraphernalia used in the railway yard. On display also is the silver cutlery and monogrammed crockery used in the dining car. But most importantly in a special shed is the carriage from which, in June 1900 Charles Henry Ryall was killed by one of the infamous man-eating lions. He was dragged through the open window of the stationery guard coach. A little north of the city is the National Museum of Kenya where one sees lifelike effigies of the early man. There are also replicas of Kenya’s famous wildlife. The most spectacular exhibit is the paintings of people from the different groups by the famous conservationist, the late Joy Adamson. A visit to the adjacent snake park is also included in the tour. FCSK002. VISIT NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK. 04 hoursThis game reserve is only about 114 sq. kilometers in size and about 8 km from the city centre. This amazing park is not a “zoo” as is sometimes thought. The predators, lions, leopards and cheetahs are not fed, they have to stalk and kill their prey if they want to survive. Only one of the “big five” is missing from the park. Buffalos are plentiful in this park but the elephant will not be seen. There is abundance for herbivorous animals especially after the rains. Among the great variety of bird life is the Maasai ostrich. The male’s head, neck and legs turn red during the mating season. Incidentally, the mating dance is something to behold. The great-looking male still has to do his best to impress the drab-looking female. The tour also includes a visit to the Animal Orphanage and Safari Walk at the park gate where orphaned or injured animals are cared for. The tour returns to the city centre by sundown. FCSK003. BOMAS OF KENYA. 03 Hours Bomas of Kenya offers Kenya in miniature! It is situated 10 kilometers from Nairobi City Centre and about 1 km from the main entrance to the game-filled Nairobi National Park. The Bomas of Kenya has been open to the public since 1973 locally and 1975 internationally. The word Bomas was derived from “Boma” – a Swahili word for enclosed homestead and there are now eleven different “Bomas” each one representing one of Kenya’s major ethnic groups which have been faithfully re-created for visitors to see the traditional village life. The greatest excitement during the afternoon visit is the display of the traditional dancing, music and songs performed in a splendid arena FCSK004. KAREN BLIXEN MUSEUM/GIRAFFE CENTRE. 03 Hours This half-day afternoon tour visits the Karen Blixen Museum at the foot of the Ngong Hills. The Museum pays homage to the memory of a woman admired universally for her spirit and her writing. The original house contains most of Karen’s possessions, which are arranged in exactly the same way she had left them. From the back of the house is a beautiful view of the Ngong Hills, where it is said Denis Finch Hatton is buried on the spot where his plane crashed. This is also home to Isaak Dinesen who starred in ‘Out of Africa’. He has a farm and home on his land. This is followed by a visit to Giraffe Centre, home of ‘Daisy’ the famous Rothschild giraffe who starred in the film “The Last Giraffe”. Pellets are supplied to the visitor so that the giraffes that come to meet the visitors can feed from the hand. Return to your hotel at sundown.
FCSK005. LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK EXPRESS. 01 day Lake Nakuru lies in the volcanic Rift Valley. The 160 km’s drive from Nairobi to Naivasha passes through the most spectacular view of the Great Rift Valley. From the top of a steep forested escarpment, the road descends into an area of dry bush, where Volcanic cones rise from the bed of this dry “trough”. Longonot is a dormant volcano 9,102 feet high and the crater has a depth of 590 feet. The other volcano, Suswa, is extinct. These are the only two “cones” of some note. Lunch is taken in the Park at one of the delightful hotels overlooking the lake. The focus of the extensive tour of the Park is the spectacular scene of the millions of flamingos on the alkaline lake. Lake Nakuru National Park is a sanctuary for the white or square-lipped rhinoceros and the Rothschild giraffe. The favorite diet of the giraffe is the tender leaves on the umbrella acacia. Another acacia is the water loving fever tree, which attracts the malaria carrying mosquito, hence the name. There is also a large variety of animals grazing in the grassland. Lion, leopard and cheetah have been sighted in this Park. It is also a bird watcher’s dream come true. A stop for tea on the return journey at the Lake Naivasha and possibly another stop at the Italian Chapel. FCSK006. AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK EXPRESS. 01 Day Depart Nairobi early morning for Amboseli National Park. The drive across Maasai country is enlivened by the sight of proud warriors and by wildlife scattered across the plains, often in close proximity to domestic stock. Amboseli National Park lies within the shadows of mighty Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Game is seen on much of the route to the park. After lunch at a lodge in the park there is another game drive during which lion, elephant and cheetah are all likely to be seen. Return to Nairobi in good time for dinner. |
